Model of Ribcage

 What are ribs?

Ribs are the curved bones in your chest that form the rib cage. Their main function is to protect your heart, lungs, and other organs, and help you breathe.

How many ribs do we have?

Most people have 24 ribs – that’s 12 on each side.

 Types of Ribs:True Ribs (1–7):

These connect directly to the chest bone (sternum).

They’re strong and stable.

False Ribs (8–10):They connect to the sternum indirectly through cartilage from the rib above.

Floating Ribs (11–12):

These don’t connect to the sternum at all!

They just “float” at the back and help protect the kidneys.

Parts of a Rib (Typical Rib like 3–9):

Head: Connects to the spine.

Neck: Short area after the head.

Tubercle: A small bump that also connects to the spine.

Angle: The bend where the rib starts to curve around.

Body/Shaft: The long part of the rib.

Costal Groove: A groove on the bottom side that carries nerves and blood vessels.

Function of ribs

They protect organs (heart, lungs, liver, etc.).

They move slightly to help your lungs expand and contract when you breathe.

They give structure to your chest and upper body.
